What is grinding and finishing?

Grinding and finishing is the stage that turns a cut, formed and welded sheet metal part into a component that fits, looks and performs the way the drawing intends. It covers weld seam dressing, edge deburring, surface preparation before coating, and the brushed or polished finishes used on visible parts.

At XHX Metal this work runs inside the same manufacturing workflow as cutting, bending and welding. Parts do not have to ship to a second supplier between fabrication and coating, which protects tolerances and shortens lead time.

Why grinding and finishing matter for fabricated parts

Cut edges, weld spatter and heat discolouration are normal results of fabrication. Left in place they cause problems that only appear later: burrs that injure operators or damage cable insulation, weld seams that show through a powder coat, sharp edges that fail a customer audit, or surfaces that reject paint because they were not prepared.

Grinding and finishing services we provide

Finishing is scoped to the part and the application rather than applied as a single standard process. Typical work includes weld seam grinding on enclosures and frames, edge deburring on laser cut and punched parts, orbital or belt finishing on visible panels, brushed stainless steel finishes, and surface preparation immediately before powder coating.

Where a part is visible in service, we agree the finish on a sample before the batch runs, so that grain direction and gloss level stay consistent across repeat orders.

How to specify grinding and finishing on your drawings

Grinding and finishing are controlled by what the drawing says. Useful information includes which edges must be deburred, whether weld seams are to be dressed flush or left visible, the required surface finish and grain direction, and any areas that must not be touched because they carry a mating face or a sealing surface.

If a part will be powder coated or painted, tell us at the quotation stage. Surface preparation and coating are easier to plan together than to add afterwards.

Quality control and inspection

Finished parts are checked for burr-free edges, consistent surface appearance and freedom from scratches or handling marks. Where the finish affects function, such as a sealing face or a sliding surface, dimensional checks are repeated after finishing because material removal changes the part.

Do you finish parts made by another supplier? Our finishing is normally part of a fabrication order where we also cut, form and weld the part. Mixed sourcing is reviewed case by case.
